
The Euro Can Cup is an international hockey tournament being hosted by the London Knights Hockey Club in collaboration with the John Labatt Centre and Global Spectrum, it’s the first professional tournament to reach Canada. The Euro-Can Cup was founded by Knights assistant coach Pat Curcio and Kerry Goulet from Shoot For a Cure. The tournament will be played in a Memorial Cup format and will draw National Hockey League calibre players to compete. Professional clubs from Germany, Switzerland and Austria will take part in the Euro Can Cup as well as London Knights and OHL Alumni who are currently playing in the National Hockey League or American Hockey League. The tournament is associated with Shoot For a Cure Hockey, a charity devoted to prevention and treatment of spinal cord injuries in hockey, as a monetary donation will be made to the charity on behalf of the Euro Can Cup. Shoot For a Cure is a great charity and the London Knights are very excited to partner with an organization that is changing the lives of injured athletes. This tournament gives charities such as Shoot For a Cure Hockey the opportunity and platform to get the cause of their charity out to many hockey fans in London and worldwide.
The Euro Can Cup is the first club tournament featuring professional hockey players to be played in Ontario, and the London Knights are very proud to host this great spectacle. Fans from North America and Europe will have the opportunity to witness exceptional hockey and competition played right here in London. This tournament will be filled with intensity, pride and the overall excitement to be involved in such an entertaining event.
The teams participating in the Euro Can Cup include: EHC Munchen (Germany), Linwest [Linz] Black Wings (Austria), Ev Zug (Switzerland) and the London Knights Alumni Team. These are some of the elite teams in European hockey, who also feature some of the most enthusiastic fans anywhere in the world. These teams are extremely tough and play a very fast and stimulating style of hockey. Ev Zug’s roster includes such former NHL players as: Brad Isbister, Paul Di Pietro, Josh Holden, Jay Harrison and head coach Doug Shedden, all of whom are extremely motivated to be playing in Canada once again. The Linwest Black Wings and the EHC Munchen rosters consist mainly of European players, who are thrilled to be playing in Canada for the first time, and are ecstatic about playing against some of the top players in the world. The London Knights roster includes alumni such as: Sam Gagner, Dylan Hunter, Brandon Prust and Rob Schremp, amongst other exciting players who have graduated from the Knights and around the OHL. The players on our London Knights roster know the passion and feverish intensity that these clubs and their fans bring to the arena each game, and they are ready for a resilient, grinding tournament which will be great to watch and be involved in.
| The Euro Can Cup will be a week–long tournament spanning from Monday August 25 – Monday August 31, 2009. Each team will play three games in the round-robin and then it is on to the playoff round, where the strongest teams will advance to play for the inaugural Euro Can Cup championship. All eight Euro Can Cup games will be played at The John Labatt Centre, the best place to watch a hockey game in southwestern Ontario.
